The Secret Is In the Location!

For a business to boom, you need to be competitive in three areas, namely a) product pricing and quality b) service and c) marketing. Fail in one and the business will flop. Carefully choosing your location will take care half of your marketing. Even if you’re selling water from the fountain of youth, you won’t be able to sell anything unless you are exposed to your target market.
Same goes for food cart franchising. You must put it in a high foot-traffic area, such as in or near bus and train stations, near schools and offices or in malls. One client of mine earns around Php5,000.00 a day, because she put her business between a school and a market. Now that’s a smart woman. Cheap doesn’t always mean better. There is a reason why malls spaces are very pricey. While researching, one crew I talked to in Ever Gotesco Commonwealth (which charges a whopping Php25,000.00 a month) said, “Ay sir, mahina na yung tatlong libo dito…”. That’s “Three thousand pesos is low here…” for those who don’t speak Tagalog.
If you are not sure if your location is good enough, ask some professional help. Your agent will be happy to refer you to a professional location assistant. Read more commonly asked questions about food carts here.

What are the permits & requirements for my Food Cart (kiosk) business?

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is about documentation, especially, “What are documents I need and will you apply those for me?” Most of the time the only needed documents are DTI registration, baranggay clearance and mayor’s permit, and these will be filed by the franchisee themselves and not by the franchiser.
The steps needed to apply for these permits vary from one municipality or another, but these need a minimal processing fee (around Php800.00 each) and a sedula or a community tax certificate, so be sure to prepare those.
You do not need to register it to BIR just yet. Food kiosks are under micro businesses, which the law permits not to pay income taxes. Just percentage taxes. When you apply for locations in malls, you might also need a letter of intent, the company profile and kiosk pictures. Now, these will be provided by the franchiser.

Making Franchising Expos work for you

For over 36 years, Francorp has been in the business of teaching companies to run and sell franchises. To date, Francorp, with 2 offices worldwide has sold thousands of franchises all over the globe, including in the Philippines where it has launched over 350 franchises that account for 24% of the industry’s total franchises.
A core in Francorp’s marketing strategy is joining trade shows, particularly the Philippine International Franchise Conference and Expo (PIFCE), staged by the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) the biggest franchise event ASEAN. Many franchisors particularly those who are not used to joining public events are a bit shy and low-key have often asked asked why they need to join trade shows, when a franchise brochure or a website will do.
Precisely, selling is such a dynamic and intricate process that probably, letting just your website or brochure do the talking can be a big mistake, a franchise sales and marketing survey conducted by Francorp in the United States in the early 20o0′s reveals that trade show is a powerful weapon for a franchisor for creating a growing arsenal of qualified leads from which franchisors can convert into lead For more mature franchisors, trade shows are a great opportunity for branding as it affirms their stature in the industry and projects what is special and unique with their brand image.
While media and non media activities remain our key lead generation tactics, in a franchise “sales war” trade shows in PIFCE offer a unique and dynamic level of direct, one on one interaction with potential franchisees in a scenario where you find all under one roof your competitors and visitors who are hungry for opportunities.
Another USA study by Veronis, Suhler and Stevenson shows that messages communicated well at a trade show has a memorability of 77% ten weeks after the show.
Every year, FRANCORP properly prepares its clients for an effective, high impact performance in franchise expos through itsFranchise Sales and Marketing Strategy Program.
To create impact and maximize your franchise expo participation, Francorp shares 6 tips with franchisors to make sure every peso provides sales and results driven performance:
1. Have a clear and concrete trade show goal. Your participation must be aligned with your expansion, geographic and branding goals.
2. Plan out details well ahead of time. Effective event participation starts with having a good event plan. Gather relevant information on the booth and the event to get the best rates.
3. Project a clear image and message. Often launching franchisors get overwhelmed by booth preparations and putting up creative displays or collateral thus forgetting what they are about.
4. Spice it up. Battling over 30,000 visitors among over 350 exhibitors is tough. Thus exert all effort to create impact and make your booth stand out in a myriad of choices.
5. Choose and train the right people. Choose outgoing, high energy, enthusiastic and listener types who can easily connect and interact with prospects.
6. Learn the value of follow up. It pays to have a post-expo strategy on how those precious leads can be converted.

What If the Business is Too Risky for Me?

When talking to clients, God knows I love questions. Nothing shouts interest more than a question, or two, or ten. But there is one particular question that I dislike addressing and that is, “What if I lose money?” and follow up questions about that topic. So I will discus this one once and for all. When you lose money, it is your responsibility. Business is a risk, and losing money is one of the risks. There… problem solved?
Seriously, though, I believe that you cannot expect profit while constantly thinking, loss. The world does not operate that way. Have you ever seen a person who curses every day that their life is miserable and their life is indeed miserable? How about a person who sees life as something to look forward to and the events that happen to that particular person is so amazing, you just have to ask them how it happened? If yes, you are witnessing the law of attraction in action. Like attracts the like. What you think, you receive. So if you are thinking loss, you will receive loss — that is 100% sure.
Here is what I recommend — focus on prosperity. Focus on the value you can provide for the people and the money will roll in. I promise. Maybe you are thinking, “But Roth, we need to address the possibility of losses!” — yes we have to address that, but please, do not think about it too much. Let the franchisor company take care of that. My friend, think profit.

Inventory Control Tips – Avoiding stolen & lost inventories

This time we will handle control on food items, like those buns, burger patties, condiments, etc. It is relatively easy to control and account for the packed inventory, like bread, siomai portions or noodle packs because they are separated into portions, which can be easily counted. Like I said before from my last post about beverage inventory controls, you just charge the employee double the normal price and they will think twice about pilfering.
What’s harder to control in pilferage in food items are those that are non portioned, like condiments, oil, butter and the like. So how do we prevent our employees from stealing these?
First of all, we should look at how they can take advantage of our inventory. They can:
  • store some in plastic/cellophane containers and take them home for use.
  • for ready mixes like waffle mix, sauce and the like: they can dilute it in water at the expense of less quality
  • buy food from your stall using customer’s money by mischarging them.
  • have other people take the stolen goods for them, then meet them up far away.
  • Well we can reduce these circumstances by:
  • making sure receiving of inventory is very important. Have them double count inventory before receiving them.
  • doing random spot checks (or have someone do that for you) for belongings that can be used to steal goods. Also perform random check of their bags.
  • having a suggestions/comments box.
  • never letting guests, off-duty crews and crews of other stalls stand by the food cart.
More importantly, for preventing pilferage in the food retail industry, take no prisoners. Super firm control should be implemented, and exempt nobody. Employees must always assume that they are never indispensable, and the owner knows that everyone is subject to temptations.

The Most Significant Factor for a Successful Franchise

Patience. Yes, Patience is a virtue. Sounds too much used of a phrase but your GMRC teacher, the TV and Seth Godin are right: Patience is the secret to success, no matter what industry you are in: I discovered a lucky secret the hard way about thirty years ago: you can outlast the other guys if you try. If you stick at stuff that bores them, it accrues. Drip, drip, drip… you win.
In franchising, even if you are fully backed up with trainings, seminars and updates, you are going to need a lot of patience. Learning the ropes on how to operate your business takes time, money and effort, now matter how small scale your business is. Only the patient will stay long enough to see profits.
Customer complaints will test your patience. It is inevitable. Even Mcdonalds gets customer complaints and they are patient with it. Employees will test your patience too. Do you have a lot of patience? If not, stick to your day job.

The Next Big Thing: Micro Business

Almost 99% of underprivileged class in the society is not well equipped with the basic arms and weapons direly needed to start drawing their future in the business world. Thus, in a very competitive market, they need a greater amount of help and assurance of any business engagement that will serve as their ladder to raise their socio-economic situation. This is where the new trend and claimed as the answer to economic problem plays its role in the community – micro franchising.
Micro franchising is a sub-conceptualized type of the traditional franchising mechanism with emphasis to small scale operations. This was designed to cater the needs of young entrepreneurs and business neophytes. Not just that, this is also a tool built for most overseas Filipino workers who want to venture into commerce and trade after piling up their savings.
These business neophytes paved their way with nothing to worry about personal operation system starting from thinking of the kind of product to introduce in the market, the name, suppliers, the target market, good location, inventory, tedious papers and legal processes, and the desirability and longevity of their business plan. It’s like handing these new businessmen the tool kit to start with an already started project, and give them the opportunity to expand and become their own boss.
To start with the biggest question of all, micro franchising gives way for low-capital investors in the market. For as low as 10,000 pesos, micro franchisors can engage in business in the bag franchising, conversion micro franchising, infrastructure based ones, and even in agent network micro franchises.
  • Stay at home moms and even professionals and students are very much familiarized with business in the bag franchising. One common example is the catalogue brought by your neighbors for you to choose different cosmetics, health care products, apparels and accessories. This gives emphasis on dealership and retailing sector.
  • Some establishments or existing small-scale business may also open their business transaction with an already expanded business. This is one way to bring life and chance to their unduly recognized product.
  • Food franchises like food stalls and kiosks as well as the water purification and refilling stations are just the common infrastructure based micro franchises where the franchisors support and aid their franchisee in acquiring equipment and tools.
  • Agent network micro franchising is common in more technically inclined entrepreneurs who desired to act as social agents for big companies. Mobile money banking is one example.
The macro level of addressing the socio-economic problem is not that ideal. Well, based on the correlation between a country’s GDP and the number of franchise operations, there is a direct proportion on such; especially that US leads the rank with $47,500 per capita with 15,000 franchise systems in operation; while the Philippines ranked 4th with 150 franchise system resulting to $3,300 per capita in 2008. Indeed, micro business franchising brought hope to low income individuals and to the economy as a whole.

Franchise Business: Boon or Bane?

The Philippines soar high with its franchising business systems bloating to almost 430% within 10 years. What’s with this popular trend that inclines business-minded Filipinos toward engaging in one, two, and more?
Partnership. The key point of franchising is its assurance of hand-in-hand business venture. People from big companies become the captain leading simple entrepreneurs into navigating the very complex and critical world of acquiring profit in a stable condition.
Franchising Package. Aspirants are given their business kit like privilege to be able to start from the beginning without fearing for undefined areas and missed out requirements for business build up.
  • Use of trade name and logo – the company has invested on their franchisee the right to use their protected brand name and representation.
  • Training, marketing and sales campaign – publicity and advertisements are shouldered by the mother company for franchise business looks like a spider web which shows your enclosure within the productivity of the mother company.
  • Initial inventory – to avoid lapses and as part of the training, franchisor will shoulder the initial inventory and eventually, it would be your standard inventory to follow to ensure accuracy.
  • Location and renovation – this is the most exciting part since for your business to really boost and reach the target market, the company’s researchers will look for a good location to set-up your business franchise. But, your own idea is also considered. Plus, renovation of franchise establishment such as fast food chains is guaranteed supervised and aided by the company to ensure consistency and adaptability.
  • Food carts – in small scale franchising, food carts and kiosks are also part of the package; painted and with the products name and logos on it. All it needs is the crew to look after and the products to be placed on.
  • Insurance, discounts, and gift checks – these are some of the freebies included in the package. Some scholarships, medical benefits, and insurance are good enough.

These deceitful people will be using scented words, promises and deceiving offers just to get your hard earned money, surprisingly people are easy attracted to it. Like what Plato says “Whatever deceives men seems to produce a magical enchantment.”

Internet is one of the fastest ways to get details and answers to your queries. The power of knowing details of a certain franchise is just on your finger tips, but this is also one of the mediums scammers use to get their victims. Make sure that you do your researches carefully before closing that business deal.
Scammers will send text messages and emails that will entice you with its promising messages. Don’t be a victim you can make sure that those text messages are genuine by calling the franchise company instead of transacting through text messages. Visit their office and check their registration through the registration office to determine the authenticity of it.

L.E.A.R.N. “The Principle”

One factor why businesses still exist is because of their customers. And when we say “customer” it includes not only of satisfied customers but also of complaining customers. Nothing compares with the fulfillment you’ll get when you satisfy or pacify a complaining one. Customers are not always right but they are important and should be treated right no matter how harsh they could be. They are vital to any business. Satisfactions will keep a business running, on the other hand, complaints will help them determine the business’ weaknesses and imperfections that will drive them to improve further their operations and standards.
One of the most effective methods in handling customer complaints is the L.E.A.R.N Principle. Before coming up with a solution, you must be able to analyze first the customer’s concern. And this method will help a lot to identify the problem then proceeding with the solution.
L.E.A.R.N. is an acronym, with 5 simple steps to follow:
• LISTEN – Listen carefully to your customer to have a better understanding of the situation. Don’t interrupt or butt in, allow him to express and release his disappointment or anger.
• EMPATHIZE – “We understand how this situation brought you inconvenience”, talk to him as if you were on the same shoes in a calm manner. Let him know you feel what he feels.
• APOLOGIZE – Apologize and never put a blame that will aggravate the situation. Say “Sorry” as much as you can to let him know you’re regretful of the unfavorable situation he had.
• REACT – Come up with the solutions to show him your commitment and sincerity to achieve his satisfaction and regain his trust. Tell him you’re countermeasures and actions to immediately solve the problem.
• NOW! – Do not procrastinate. Take every complaint with urgent action. Be proactive! “If we don’t take care of our customers, someone else will.” – UNKNOWN

Inventory 101

Inventory System: Why do it?
An inventory system is important in running and managing any business. An inventory system can sometimes be intricate and simple. Most of businesses do determine what they will record and what it includes. Decide and be specific what you include in the inventory. For an instance, if you’re doing an inventory of office equipment such as computers, copiers, fax machines, and communication devices, it is advisable to be methodical so you won’t be in trouble in the long run, and it helps you facilitate things well. It is also advised to determine all aspects of a particular item in the inventory list. Be specific in your record, consider the technical aspects, size, date purchased, serial number, unit number, brand, and others. Gather all the date precisely and make sure that you maintain this inventory management system. Don’t forget to enter the information into the company’s inventory system. Every company has its own data base software or something like spreadsheet. Your inventory management system must be used safely and securely.
Why is inventory system important?
Keeping and maintaining an inventory is very significant procedure in the business, because inventories are frequently the expense incurred from business operations. The purpose of an inventory system is to track and sustain the inventory itself; to increase effectiveness in the operations as well.
• Inventory orders – this helps many businesses in their accurate recording of consumer sales. There’s an electronic type of ordering which is called Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). This permits companies to retain the proper amount of stock by controlling the costs. It also ensures that orders are placed instantaneously.
• Stock maintenance – this allows businesses to properly order and maintain various types of items/goods as with its computerized features.
• Price levels – employing inventory system would help the business find the lowest price on inventory items and ensure the best deals are achieved upon purchasing of items. Moreover, it tracks costs from purchased items and organize a report indicating which suppliers have the lowest cost on goods.
• Count methods – it is a cardinal for every company that all inventories must be counted and arranged. Through the help of computerized systems, the inventory procedure will be efficient. Inventories can be adjusted after conducting a physical count.
• Trend analysis – one of the functions in inventory management system is the trending analyses that are produced for management check. The said trends are used to verify which months have high inventory levels.

Errors of First Time Business Takers

An entrepreneur is still a way different from a business man, though they seem to be alike. An entrepreneur creates, while a business man just sells. Creativity is the word. They differ in a sense of being creative. Once you become an entrepreneur, you must stand as an entrepreneur. There are lots of entrepreneurs who have failed in their businesses. Let’s find out the reasons and solutions to their mistakes.
Mistake 1:
It is not always about the capital, location, and advertising. It’s all about the PASSION! Many build empires without the knowledge in building an empire. This means they fail to make a transition from being a hobbyist to an entrepreneur. For instance, a person who would put up a print and studio shop without enough knowledge and passion in photography, right? This actually happens most of the time that people would rather blend in the trends of the society and follow what their friends suggest than pursuing the things they are interested in. Putting up a business which is not your thing is somewhat a ridiculous idea. Instead, go for your passion and hobbies. I strongly believe that passion + knowledge + enough resources = successful business
Mistake 2:
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Planning is very indispensable. Everything starts with a careful planning not only in business but also in other activities and responsibilities in life. Though you think your planning process may seem long and tedious at the moment, it will benefit you more than you can imagine in the future. Have your feasibility studies and business plan well-stretched and thoughtfully presented.
Mistake 3:
Sometimes, beginning entrepreneurs team up with someone (could be a friend or relative) and offers them commission to help sell the product. There’s nothing wrong with strategic partnership, however if your goal is to escape from selling, then you’re embracing failure. Get to know your target market as quickly as possible.
Mistake 4:
Many beginning entrepreneurs get rid of selling their products to people they do not know as they are certain that their family members and closed friends will support them and buy their products. This is a no-no for beginning entrepreneurs. The feedback for the product would be biased since you’re a family member, it would be hard for them to give you a negative feedback. Family and friends do not count. Go and reach out!

Tips on Food Cart Business

Food Cart Business Tips by Josm Rosuello, Foodcart Association of the Philippines president, and Mark So, Businessmaker Academy chief operating officer, list down the ingredients that will turn your food cart business into a crackling success:

  • Hone your management skills. Although this business is about food, you don’t have to be an expert cook, but you need management skills to make it work.
  • Know your products better. Think of ways on how to make them sell well.
  • Join food cart trade fairs. Mine them for information on suppliers and ideas.
  • Understand your market. Study your market carefully and work on their preferences. “A food cart business may be a little slow in the first three months but if the lean period goes beyond that, you’re already in danger,” So warns.
  • Do not go on a price war. This is a sure way to make your business go bankrupt. “Big companies have extra stocks from other branches to sell, which is why they can lower their prices,” So reveals. Instead, offer value add-ons.
  • Replicate success. “This is a numbers game. Once you’ve successfully set up one, duplicate it at another location,” So says.
  • Cluster your food carts. Open at locations not very far from each other “to make the management and operation of your food carts much easier,” Rosuello says.
  • Sign up. Make noticeable signages that advertise your products well. Opt for colorful and bright colors that would attract attention.
  • Create your own value meal. Customers are always on the lookout for bargains. Offer budget meals and buy one, take one schemes. Make sure your profit margin is protected.
  • Offer value-added services. Free deliveries to customers in nearby areas are sure to generate more orders.
  • Market your business well. Banners and flyers are a good way to promote your business especially if you’re just starting out. Indicate promotional discounts and value-added services.

How to Make Waffles with Filling

The phenomenal success of Waffle Time has opened the door for many entrepreneurs to start their own waffle cart business. Everyone else wants to learn these companies’ trade secrets. However, the success of the business does not lie on the recipe itself. It’s a combination of marketing strategy, good location, quality product and service, and branding.
This article will teach you the recipe of making waffles. It’s up to you to try adding some twist to this basic waffle recipe before competing with the established brands. Josie de Jesus, one of the trainers at Ultima Entrepinoy Forum Center, says that they’re teaching their participants to use choco and caramel fillings aside from the usual hotdog, cheese or ham. Other waffle carts use fruit jams as fillings.
Depending on the brand of waffle maker, this project will require more or less P1,000. Waffle maker costs anywhere from P300 to P3,000 while the hand mixer costs anywhere from P500 to P1,500.
